Another milestone at Nøgne Ø

Today is the day we pass 1 million liters (8386 US barrels) brewed at Nøgne Ø this year. Last year we brewed approximately 900.000 liters (7547 US barrels), so our brewers have been really busy this year.

The beer being brewed is an old and dear one. Our English Bitter at 4,5% ABV. Nøgne Ø Bitter is a light session ale with an assertive hop aroma of East Kent Goldings. It was actually one of the first beers made at Nøgne Ø. First time brewed on May 15. 2003!

The Nøgne Ø brew team have been working hard this year: From left: Rune Karlsen, Ingrid E.Skistad, Edvard Hortemo (Production manager), Kjetil Jikiun and Rolf Tore "Toa" Vik.

Gluten!

We are happy to announce that we have come across an enzyme which is supposed to break down gluten. At this time we have started using this enzyme in Bitter and Porter. The first Porter batch brewed like this is #876, and the first Bitter is #874.  All subsequent batches of these two beers will be brewed with this enzyme. Being a small brewery, we do not have the means to get all analysis done (or even to keep up to date with the current legislation) in order to determine whether these beers are gluten free or have lower levels of gluten.  As such we do not claim that these beers are gluten free.

Brewing abroad

We recently went to the UK to brew our Bitter for the coming beer festival at J D Wetherspoon. It all took place at Batemans in Lincolnshire. To brew in a classic British brewery was a great experience. This was the first time we have fermented any of our beers in open fermenters.  It was probably a "first" as well for the brewers at Batemans to use the amount of hops required to brew our Bitter.
Thanks to everyone at Batemans for a great time!!
